I'm really bothered by this... |

Aiden has a homework folder. In Preschool. He's FOUR. His teacher warned me at his last conference that she is disgusted by what is going on in
Kindergarten now, how it upsets her. How they spend 45 minutes in circle time doing rote memorization. How they have to know how to write their names, read
site words and know all lowercase letters BEFORE kindergarten even starts! She said they have quizzes every other day and most days...don't even give the
kids snack/recess because there is no time!!! (half day kids) I'm sick over this! He goes to the public school because he is on an IEP and he recieves
services from them...jeez, if it is this bad now...how bad is it going to get? There is a reason I quit teaching in this state I think! I'm just so upset
over this...and even more so because his homework is worksheets...like four different worksheets...not even a fun activity or interactive activity...UGGGGGG

I can't even express to you how ridiculous I think it is that they expect kids to know all of that before kindergarten. That is what kindergarten is for.
It seems like the education system doesn't even take into account that children will spend less time learning a skill at a later age than they will at a
younger age. Yeah I can try and teach my 5 year her multiplication tables, but I'll be wasting my time when she can learn them a lot easier when she's
7. That's another perfect example of why I home school. The other way just makes no sense to me at all. I'm sorry that you have to deal with this. I
hope you can work out an alternative.

DD's school is the same way. She has homework (notebook), and a workbook (4 pages per week- due every Thursday).
Everything you mentioned, DD has to do and I also think its a little too much for a 4 yr old. |

It's absurd. WE have full day kindergarten here and you wouldn't believe the reading and homework that goes on. My niece is in First grade and she does
more things than we ever did like in 3rd. It's outrageous.
Dave will be a big brother in February!!

kindergarten is now the NEW 1st grade. at least that is how Brennens teacher says it. he goes full day and thankfully his teacher makes it fun for them. He
gets 4-5 oages a week to due at home gets them on Monday and they are due the following Monday. Which is great. I think they are trying to teacher to much to
soon. it is crazy. Gavin is in 2nd and he brought home algebra homework! I didnot do that till I was in middle school.
I hope you can find a way to homeschool |

Homeworks a little much for a 4 year old...
However when I went in to Kindergarten we had to know the alphabet (say it and recognize the letters), count to 100 and be able to print our names.... Algebra in first grade? Thats crazy!

My Ds is in SK, he does have a bit of reading homework/phonics homework to do...but what with his every other day schedule we have time to read books..and do
abit of phonics..how much he understands is another thing...We do have a reading log we are to write in what we read him, but i read him books and forget about
the log...bad mum!
He does not have that much homework. good luck with everything... who is aloud to make these changes in kindergarten, aren't they supposed to go thru the principle or the school board?...
what about parents speaking up at the next school meeting? someone might be able to make a difference? |

Wow. I guess this goes hand-in-hand with the fact that so many households need to be two income households just to survive so kids are thrust into daycare
settings practically from birth. Most registered daycares are run like schools for really little people so perhaps those that have been in this system since
before a year old are ready for this level by jr. kindergarten? Maybe tying their shoes is so age 2 to them?? And then where does it leave the kids who were
able to stay home with mom or dad until jk and spent their days eating sand in the backyard sandbox rather than doing alphabet and number drills?
This really reaffirms to me that I am making the right choice for my children in not returning to a full time job so that they can have those years to just be kids before they begin the insititution of education by age 4. However, I am now terribly frightened of what they will face when they do begin school. I guess I have to step up what they learn at home so they're not lagging behind before they even begin! Wow. What is this world coming to? I could definitely see myself looking into homeschooling if this is the new norm! |

this is an issue of concern for me as well since we can't afford preschool and are not dead poor enough to qualify for the free ones either - so Brandon
hasn't had any preschool and will start kindergarten in the fall of 2009. I think they are pushing too hard too fast with these young kids. I agree with
Princess, I'm a SAHM not because I can't work - I have a degree - but because I feel that staying home with them is the best choice I can make for
them, and we can barely squeak by on DH's income until he's out of school when it will improve. If I had to work - that would be different. We just
have to be frugal for the next couple years and we'll be fine. It's just so hard these days to raise a family - and for all those that have kids in
kindergarten with homework that you have to sit down and help them with and have parents who both have to work - wow, that sounds impossible.

Yep, that's why I homeschooled Kyle for half of Kindergarten until we moved to a new county with a better school system. Some systems take things a little
too far, imo. There are higher standards nowadays in general, and they do learn things at least a year ahead of when we did as kids. But there are ways to
balance it with letting them be kids. I see alot of homeschooling happening here too if things get worse.

I agree with whoever mentioned it being nearly impossible to be a two income household and still help kids with homework. My dh works such long hours he is
rarely home to help with the homework. I work most days when the kids are at school and most Sundays as well. It seems like there's no time for anything
and lots of times we don't get all the homework done. Tzar is in 3rd grade, but I still have to go over every worksheet he does, help him study for
spelling tests, and sign his reading homework. Joey is in K and he has little books sent home to read and there is something different each day having to do
with the book. Ex. Monday read the words (site words I think) at the front of the book and then read the story. Tues. Read the sentences at the front of the
book and then read the story. There is also something written to do every day, like write the name of a character from the story or write something about what
happened in the story.

Adreyan attends 1/2 day preschool Monday through Thursday. Each day they get 2 - 3 sheets of work. He usually completes it at the sitter's house while I am
still working. Luckily, he doesn't need help, just someone to tell him to do it. Similar situation, she is trying to prep them as much as possible for
kindergarten. I'm OK because Adreyan doesn't seem stressed about it.
My memory is bad, but is Aiden in a regular ed preschool class or a preschool collaborative? I don't see that much paper work coming from the collaborative. |

In the UK children start school a year earlier than in the states I think. So they start preschool when they're 3, and proper school when they're 4.
Depending on the preschool, some 3 yr olds will have 'homework'. Maybe something like "Find three things beginning with the letter B", or
"Find two things to do with Winter". They then take those in the next day.
When they're 4 they'll bring books home to read, and maybe have worksheets as well. I don't think it should take longer than 15-20 minutes though. Personally I'm quite against the principle of 'sight words'. I don't think learning words in that way is helpful, I prefer a more phonetic approach to learning to read (OK, so there are some words that don't really fit that, but not many). Good luck with the homeschooling thing! Rach
